Sculptures, Cactus Salads, and French Toast: A Guadalajara Story
Guadalajara knows how to do food — and not just Mexican food! One of the best parts of being here has been discovering incredible flavors from all over the world. Believe it or not, we’ve had some of the best Italian food of our lives here, and even the sushi has been pretty fantastic.

This week, the food adventures kept coming. We visited Tlaquepaque, a historic district that’s full of charm. At Casa Fuerte, we had an amazing meal that included a fresh and tangy nopales cactus salad. Walking through the streets, we admired quirky sculptures and spent some time browsing the antique shops. The kids especially loved the antique stores — it turned into a fun little history lesson for them.

Over the weekend, we found a French bakery that completely won us over: Boulangerie C. The kids were in heaven, especially Garrison, who was thrilled by the French music playing in the background (he’s been learning French on top of Spanish!). Rebecca, of course, announced that we had to go back soon. Between bites of the best French toast I’ve ever had, she crocheted — her new favorite hobby. Garrison, ever the mocha lover, couldn’t stop talking about how perfect the foam art was. And yes, the drinks were delicious all around!

While Guadalajara hasn’t been quite as packed with culture as we’d expected, the food has been an incredible and welcome surprise. It feels like we’re tasting the world, one meal at a time.
