Two Countries, One Family: Food, Folks, and Feline Cafes
Last week, we left Mexico for a new adventure in Hawaii! This week, we’re exploring the Big Island—a first-time visit for everyone in my family except for my husband, Harley.
One of the most striking things about this island is how much of it is covered with lava flows. It’s unlike anywhere else I’ve been, and it’s such a sharp contrast to Kauai, the Hawaiian island I’ve visited most frequently. The Big Island feels alive—you can see so clearly that this land is newly formed and continues to grow, thanks to its active volcano.

We started our journey at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, staying at the Hawaii Volcano House. This hotel sits right at the edge of the volcano, inside the national park! It was the perfect base for exploring the area’s natural wonders—everything from rugged lava trails to unique volcanic landscapes. At about 4,000 feet of elevation, the cooler weather was such a novelty. After months of heat, we finally got to pull out pants and coats! It’s funny how wearing something as simple as a jacket can feel like such a refreshing change of pace when you’ve been in perpetual summer.

After spending a couple of nights exploring the volcanic side of the island, we transitioned to the Kailua-Kona area on the west coast. Here, we’ve been soaking up the classic Hawaii sunshine, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, and—most importantly—relaxing.

As full-time travelers, we’ve learned how important it is to intentionally schedule real “vacations” within our travels. This week is one of those precious pauses—an opportunity to slow down, step away from work, and simply enjoy time together as a family.

We’re savoring every moment of this mix of adventure and leisure. There’s something magical about starting the week on volcanic craters in cooler weather and ending it with the warm, sunny beaches of Kona.

If you’ve never been to the Big Island, I can’t recommend it enough—it’s a place that’s wild, beautiful, and alive in a way that’s completely unique.
