Our Philippines Adventure: A Journey of Connection and Discovery
We’re finding the Philippines to be such an easy and welcoming place to explore! All the signage is in English, and nearly everyone we meet speaks English, making it effortless to navigate and connect with people. The warmth and friendliness here are truly remarkable—people are always so helpful and kind. Plus, every indoor space has air conditioning, which has been an absolute lifesaver in the heat and humidity!

So far, we’ve been based in the big cities—Manila first, and now Cebu, the second-largest city. Both offer every modern convenience you could imagine. The internet is excellent, the shopping malls are massive and stocked with everything you could need or want, and there’s no shortage of fantastic restaurants to try. The cities are also quite diverse, with people from many Asian countries living and working here. That said, we’ve noticed there aren’t as many Americans or Westerners around. In fact, we’ve only come across a couple of other Western families during our time here.

Of course, every country has its unique characteristics that take a little getting used to. Here in the Philippines, one of the more noticeable aspects is the stark contrast between wealth and poverty. You’ll find affluent neighborhoods with beautiful homes and thriving businesses, and then, not far away, areas where people live in shacks or on the street. These poorer areas also have a lot of street dogs and cats—more than I’ve seen in any other place I’ve visited. While we’re accustomed to seeing poverty in U.S. cities, the scale here is much larger and more striking.

That being said, there is so much to enjoy about the Philippines! We’ve loved exploring Cebu, which is full of history, natural beauty, and cultural treasures. One of the highlights so far has been visiting Magellan’s Cross. It’s said to stand in the same place where it was originally planted in 1521. The original cross is now encased in a larger wooden cross that was made in 1835 to protect it. It’s fascinating to see something so historic up close, and it’s been a great homeschooling moment for the kids to connect what they’re learning with real-world experiences!
