Packing Like a Pro: Tales from the Road
This week, I’d love to share some travel tips and tricks that we’ve picked up over the years—little nuggets of wisdom we’ve learned while traveling as a family of five. When you’re on the move with so many people and all the stuff that comes with it, you develop systems that make life so much easier. These are some of the things that have worked for us and might just make your next trip a breeze!
Packing Musts!
Compression Travel Cubes
If you haven’t tried compression cubes yet, let me tell you—they are a game-changer! These handy tools don’t just help with packing; they also make unpacking at your destination super simple. Just unzip the cube, place it in a drawer or on a shelf, and voilà! Your clothes are organized, neat, and contained. When it’s time to move on, zip the cube closed, toss it back in your suitcase, and you’re done. Here’s a bonus tip: We use different colored cubes for each family member. It’s so easy to spot who is whose at a glance.
And when it comes to packing, the compression feature works wonders to save space. Our only problem now? Resisting the temptation to pack so much that our suitcases end up overweight!
Hanging Toiletry Kits
After years of trial and error, we’ve evolved to using two large-hanging toiletry kits for nearly all our essentials. Here’s why this system works so well for us:
- One large kit is much better than juggling several smaller ones. Packing and unpacking becomes a quick, single step.
- Hanging toiletry kits are an absolute lifesaver. Most bathrooms have a hook to hang them on, even when counter space is limited. Plus, the hanging design makes everything inside visible and accessible, saving you from digging around in a messy bag
Suitcase Security
- AirTags or Tile Trackers in Checked Bags
This tip gives us peace of mind, even though we’ve thankfully never had to test it! By placing a tracker in our checked luggage, we know we could locate our bags if the airline ever misplaced them. - Photos of Checked Bags (Inside and Out)
Before every trip, we take a quick snapshot of our packed suitcases—both the contents inside and the suitcase itself. If anything ever gets lost or damaged, having clear documentation of what was packed and the bag’s condition makes filing claims much smoother.
Travel Ease
- Backpacks or Duffels with a Trolley Strap
This feature is now a must-have for any small bag we buy. The trolley strap allows backpacks or duffels to slip easily over a roller suitcase handle, which means one less thing to juggle while navigating airports or train stations. It’s a simple detail that makes a world of difference. - Tablets with Pre-Downloaded Shows and Movies
Our kids have become flight pros, and a lot of that is thanks to this tip. On flights, they’re allowed unlimited screen time—it’s their favorite part of the trip! We use Netflix to download their favorite shows and movies beforehand and temporarily disable their usual app restrictions through Google Family Link.
This setup means they stay happy and entertained for hours with just a tablet and headphones. For us, it’s a win-win. We already have so much to carry for the flight, so keeping them entertained without additional toys or activities makes things so much easier.
