Tet, Traffic, and Tradition: Our First Days in Hanoi
Last week, we made the move from Cebu to Hanoi, Vietnam, and wow—what a change! Hanoi has such a different energy from our past locations, and I feel like we’re really experiencing the contrast between Asian and Western cultures in new ways.
We arrived just in time for Tet, Vietnam’s Lunar New Year celebration, and it was an incredible experience. At midnight, fireworks lit up the sky, families gathered in their holiday best to visit Buddhist temples, and for a few rare days, Hanoi’s famously chaotic traffic nearly disappeared! Most locals head back to their family villages for the holiday, leaving the city feeling almost quiet—something I never expected to see in Hanoi. Thankfully, we stocked up on groceries before we arrived because nearly every store and restaurant shut down for three days!
We’ll be staying here for about a month, and one of the coolest parts so far has been my two older kids taking horseback riding lessons. They absolutely love it! Beyond being a great activity, it’s also a way for us to step outside the tourist experience and connect with local life. The stable manager is French, so we hear a mix of French, English, and Vietnamese while we’re there—it’s a truly multicultural experience.
Hanoi is already giving us so many unique memories, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of our time here brings!
