Two Countries, One Family: Food, Folks, and Feline Cafes
Last Week in Mexico: A Tale of Two Countries
Last week marked our final full week in Mexico, bringing to a close an incredible three-month journey through Mexico and Colombia. As we reflect, we thought it’d be fun to compare our experiences across different categories—sharing what stood out in each place and which country emerged as our personal favorite.

FOOD: Mexico Takes the Crown
While both countries offered some culinary delights, Mexico’s food scene was the overall winner.
In Colombia, we relished tropical fruits, fresh juices, and delectable seafood, all freshly made. However, variety was limited—it was primarily Colombian cuisine, and our kids weren’t fans of traditional dishes.
In contrast, Mexico was dazzled with its diversity. From sushi to Italian, the range of international and local options like fish tacos delighted the kids and us alike.

PEOPLE: Colombia’s Warmth Wins
In Colombia, the warmth and friendliness of the people stood out. Strangers adored our kids, offering compliments and making us feel welcome everywhere. The ease of conversation, even in Spanish, was a refreshing contrast to Mexico, where people seemed more reserved, resembling U.S. norms.

COST: Colombia’s Budget-Friendly Advantage
Colombia also scored on affordability—living costs were about half those in the U.S., compared to Mexico’s 75%. With Mexico’s added 16% sales tax and customary tipping of 10–20%, Colombia offered more value for every peso spent.

CAT CAFES: Mexico’s Purrfect Places
For our cat-loving daughter, Mexico was paradise. Colombia lacked child-friendly cat cafes, but Mexico delivered! In Puerto Vallarta, we enjoyed a café with a resident cat, and in Guadalajara, we became regulars at a bustling cat café. These visits brought joy and memorable family moments.
Through this head-to-head comparison, we hope you can sense the charm of both Mexico and Colombia. Each offered unique experiences, yet our family favorites stood out clearly.
