From Mausoleums to Miacademy: How Our Kids Learn on the Go
A common question I get about our travels is: how do the kids complete their schoolwork?
First, they’re soaking up an incredible amount of experiential learning. Subjects like history, natural sciences, social studies, and languages come alive daily through real-world experiences. Just this week, we visited Ho Chi Minh’s former house and his mausoleum—an unforgettable lesson in history and culture.

For more traditional schooling, we embraced a tech-driven approach. Carrying a library of books around the world wasn’t practical, so I dove into the world of online homeschool programs—and I was amazed by the options available! With just a tablet and headphones, the kids can access a wealth of learning materials from anywhere.

Our core curriculum is based on Miacademy, which covers essential subjects along with a variety of engaging electives the kids love. The platform is user-friendly, and I can easily adjust their coursework to match their learning levels—challenging them where they excel and reinforcing areas that need more focus. We supplement with Duolingo for languages, and the kids have also started exploring Duolingo’s developing music and math programs. To reinforce skills, they use spelling and math flashcard apps for quick review sessions.

We also incorporate some offline learning. The older two journal daily, strengthening their handwriting, spelling, and storytelling skills, while Theo engages in hands-on play with blocks and other activities to develop motor skills—though, to be honest, all the kids enjoy playing with those too!

The biggest lesson they’ve gained from this journey? Learning isn’t confined to a classroom; it’s a way of life. They’ve fully embraced this mindset, diving into subjects that spark their curiosity. Right now, Garrison is obsessed with chess and plays every chance he gets—even sneaking in games on our phones during downtime. Rebecca, on the other hand, taught herself to crochet and now brings her supplies along on our adventures. The ability to learn anytime, anywhere, and to explore their interests deeply has been one of the greatest gifts of this experience.
